Description

Watercolor drawing on paper of three "bird's nest" fungi in shades of beige and golden brown, accompanied to right of drawings by several pencil lines of text: all three specimens reside on twigs or wood; they are cup-shaped, and look like tiny bird's nests, complete with eggs; color of fungi range from tawny gold with brown shading (top specimen), to greyish-brown (specimen to right), to pale yellow (lower image); the lower most specimen consists of a primary fungus (at tip of twig), in addition to three small fungi located on the twig branch and at the bifurcation of the branch; the three primary specimens are 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch in size; the "eggs" or spores are visible inside each cup-shaped "nest" (see National Audobon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms, 1981, p.827); the following text appears on right side of page, "Sept 10-1900. Litchfield. Conn / Nidulariales- / Crucibulum vulgare- / Growing on small twigs and dead leaves- / Peridium bowl shaped cottony".
