Alexander Gilson was childless and lived with his mother, Sarah Gilson (c. 1787–1893), and sister, Cornelia Gilson (1831–1917), in his Red Hook village home until his death. Gilson bequeathed his properties to his mother and sister. The Gilsons’ connections to Red Hook’s Methodist Episcopal Church are attested by the family’s burial in the church cemetery.
